Make a Rush Hat to Fit Your Head
$230 class and materials
Spend two days weaving a beautiful, all-natural rush hat directly on a mold selected to suit you. This beginner-friendly workshop keeps the techniques approachable while giving you the satisfying experience of creating a functional hat from natural materials.

What you’ll do
Day 1, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
- Make a coaster to get familiar with the materials.
- Choose your hat mold. Please bring a fitted hat that fits you well, such as a baseball cap, for sizing reference. No elastic or knitted hats.
- Select, cut, and weave your spokes.
- Transition your start onto your mold.
Day 2, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
- Return refreshed and ready to weave.
- Weave the hat body.
- Flip your hat and begin the brim.
- Add your choice of border. Several options will be demonstrated.
- Model your new hand-woven hat.
Good to know
- Tuition: $200, plus $30 materials, included in the $230 registration price.
- Skill level: No prerequisite skills required.
- Age: 18 and over.
- Lunch: We will take short lunch breaks each day. Please bring your own lunch or hop over to the Nordland General Store for a sandwich and a coffee.
- Sizing: You’ll use one of more than a dozen hand-made molds. Your finished hat should be within one to two sizes of your head, leaning slightly large rather than small. Self-adhesive hat-sizing options will be available.
Registration policy
Registration is non-refundable, due to the small class size and nature of the materials used. If you need to cancel, you are welcome to sell or give your place to a friend. A confirmation will be sent once payment is complete.
Instructor Bio
Radha is a basket weaver who farms and wildcrafts weaving materials on Marrowstone Island. Each basket is woven with traditional techniques developed and refined by generations of artisans who have created and shared this craft. Radha has trained with Roma people in France and, most recently, with American and Irish basket weavers Katherine Lewis and Hanna Van Aelst. She sells her work at newquistforge.com and teaches rush and willow basketry workshops locally and through the Northwest Basket Weavers Guild.

Our products are made to order. When you order, it is a pre-order, and the blacksmith gets to work to fulfill your order. We do not keep a backstock or inventory of our products.

Returns/Exchange/Cancellations

These products are made to last a lifetime. Each purchase comes with a Limited Lifetime Guarantee at no additional charge to you. Our guarantee protects the buyer from any cracks or breakage that may occur over time. If this happens a free replacement in the original size will promptly be issued. In the case of baskets, a replacement that closely mimics the original shall be issued.
There may be marks, small surface blemishes and natural discolorations,
etc. that occur during the production process - these in no way affect
the beauty and function of the cookware. As such, cosmetic markings are normal and fall within our rigorous quality control standards. Our products are living materials and will develop lovely, rich patinas with use.

Warping can happen with carbon steel cookware. Warping happens when an empty pan or wok is left on a hot stove top. This is not covered in our lifetime guarantee. You can contact us about warping--we can fix your warped Newquist pan or wok at an hourly shop rate. Contact us for details
